Summer Learning and Nutrition
Summer Matters is the first-ever statewide campaign focused on creating and expanding access to high quality summer learning opportunities for all California students. The campaign is raising awareness about the devastating effects of summer learning loss and the beneficial impact of summer learning programs. A diverse statewide coalition of educators, policymakers, advocates, school district leaders, mayors, parents and others working collaboratively to promote summer learning in California, Summer Matters is increasing the number of students served by summer learning programs and generating momentum and support for summer learning among education, elected, business, civic and philanthropic leaders across the state. The Summer Meal Coalition is a statewide network united to combat hunger and obesity by helping California’s children in need gain access to free and healthy meals through the USDA’s summer nutrition programs. Increasing participation in the federal Summer Nutrition Programs—the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the National School Lunch Program (NSLP)—is critical to ensure the health and well-being of low-income children. During July 2014, the Summer Nutrition Programs served nearly 3.2 million children, an increase of 7.3% over 2013. See the report here.
