In two separate studies researchers have found that by giving students free fruits and vegetables as snacks, and by giving them a lunch period long enough to finish their lunch, we can improve their diets and health. Read more here.

Kaiser Permanente Helps the Healthy Behaviors Initiative Expand in the Central Valley
August 2015The Center for Collaborative Solutions (CCS) is pleased to announce that it has received a grant from the Kaiser Permanente National Community Benefit at the East Bay Community Foundation to establish five Healthy Behaviors Learning Centers in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties over the next year. These Learning Centers will join 31 Healthy Behaviors Learning Centers across the state in promoting healthy eating and physical activity through changes in policy, practice, and environments. California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has released A Blueprint for Great Schools Version 2.0, the latest iteration of the state road map for Education. Version 2.0 contains a recommendation (on page 8) to "Continue to build statewide capacity for expanded learning through the ongoing implementation of the CDE After School Division Strategic Plan. The California AfterSchool Network has published State of the State of Expanded Learning in California 2014-2015. This report provides an overview of the public investment in expanded learning opportunities in California. It was released at the California Afterschool Challenge and was shared with members of the CA Legislature along with documents outlining the state investment in the ASES program for each legislative district. Moscoy Elementary School becomes the 27th Healthy Behaviors Learning Center in California
April 2015We are thrilled to announce that the CAPS Program at Moscoy Elementary School has been certified as our newest Healthy Behaviors Learning Center! This San Bernardino City Unified School District program joins 26 other Healthy Behaviors Learning Center sites across California. The expanded learning program at Moscoy offers exceptionally high quality programming in dance, yoga, gardening, cooking, nutrition education, drumming, sports and science, and is making a real difference in the lives of students and their families and community. More than 160 children participate in exciting and engaging activities every day and are acquiring new skills, developing healthy eating habits and making physical activity a central part of their lives. Congratulations to the Site Director and her team, and to the CAPS leadership team, the administration and faculty, and families at Moscoy on your outstanding achievements!

September 2014The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Trust for America's Health has released its 11th annual report on the obesity of the nation. Formerly known as "F as in Fat", the report reveals that after decades of rising obesity rates among adults, the pace of increase is beginning to slow, but rates remain high. Read more here.
